HMRC VAT Teams Facing Significant Backlog

This page was last updated on September 6, 2022
HMRC’s VAT teams across the UK are still operating with significant work backlogs, despite assurances that these would be cleared by the end of April.

The backlog is resulting in delays to every kind of VAT interaction – from registrations to the disclosures of error on VAT returns.

They are down to a combination of Covid-19 and a reorganisation within HMRC’s VAT teams and both businesses and their advisers are experiencing lengthy delays in HRMC’s teams responding to queries and communications.

In such circumstances, it’s more important than ever to get expert advice to ensure there are no mistakes in any VAT information your business submits, which could exacerbate delays.

Can we help?

If you have any questions or need help with queries to HMRC regarding VAT, please speak with your Shipleys’ contact or talk to Nancy Cruickshanks and her team. Her details appear on this page.

Specific advice should be obtained before taking action, or refraining from taking action, in relation to this alert.
